ICT-Cubes Decode Webservice: From Slat Sequences to Cleartext

Abstract:

The RWTH Faculty of Electical Engineering and Informationtechnology will soon move into the ICT Cubes. The facades of the cubes carry a text, which is encoded to a barcode formed by a slat sequence. The slats come in three types, namely left, right, and middle. The goal is to develop a mobile app that allows to read the text when the camera of a mobile phone is pointed to a facade of the cubes. In this talk, a first milestone is presented, namely a webservice that allows to decode any part of the slat sequence. Since the text is encoded by a variable length code, the main challenge is synchronization. Several approaches are discussed and the performance of the current implementation is presented. An outlook is given to how a mobile app could be build upon the currently implemented webservice, which is available at ict-cubes.appspot.com.
